(please note, this is not particularly PC)
There is a common site while walking around the streets of Vancouver. Well, there are actually many, but one in particular I want to focus on today - people apparently talking to themselves. The numbers of times you're about to pass someone on the sidewalk or seawall and then you notice they're talking to themselves. Sometimes quietly, someones not so quietly. My first reaction is to think, ok, they're a little crazy. And indeed many are. Its a sad fact that there are a lot of people with mental health issues in the city. Usually brought on by drug abuse. And so some of them wander around talking to themselves. It's sad, but there you go. But sometimes, just when I'm thinking, there's another crazy one, I realize they have a bluetooth headset plugged into their ear and are actually talking to someone else, maybe a long way away. This seems a lot more common here than in the uk. So first I think, oh, they're not crazy. And then, a few seconds later, as they pass me, continuing their conversation with thin air, I change my mind, and add them to the crazy list after all.
That's quite an unusual barton blog update - mostly it's the blue tooth hopefully...
ReplyDeleteHmmm, no, sadly Vancouver is well known as a good place for drugs and drug abuse. Also, due to the mild winters, it is also a good home for the street homeless, of whome I beleive 50% are estimated to have a mental health issue.
